Canonical URL

When setting a Canonical URL in RankMath it shows a preview URL of the URL but then it also reads please insert a URL, does this mean that I need to re-enter the URL into the Canonical URL tag or should I leave it as it is already prefilled? And should only place a URL in there if I want to change the canonical URL?

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and bringing your concern to our attention.

Rank Math will already set the post’s current URL as the canonical URL of the page by default. If you’re going to set the canonical URL manually, its purpose would be to inform Google that it is a duplicate page, and should not be indexed.

For your posts/pages to show in your sitemap, we recommend leaving the Canonical URL as it is. This is one of the common reasons why a post or page is missing from your sitemap.

You can also check this link for more information:

I hope that helps. Thank you, and please don’t hesitate to contact us if you need further assistance.

    Thanks for your response.

so that means a Canonincal tag is already placed in the page already and no need to place rel=canonical tag in the page?

    Hello,

    Thank you for following up.

Yes, that is correct. No need to enter a canonical URL in the Advanced Tab in Rank Math settings. If you set it up manually, its main purpose is to let Google know that it is a duplicate page.

    I hope that helps.

Thank you, and looking forward to helping you.

    Perfect Thanks!
