Connecting and setting up Rank math connection to Google Analytics allows you to make use of the Analytics module in Rank math: https://rankmath.com/kb/analytics/
If you don’t wish to use this module or/and have another tool for this, you can skip enabling this module on your site.

I want to have the Analytics but I’m struggling to understand why I would need a new account for the same website? I don’t want to lose that history that’s been accumulating for 4 years.
I’ve been using Yoast for 4 years and have just moved to Rank Math Pro.

If your current Google Analytics account is using V3 or Universal Analytics, then you don’t need to create a new one as Rank Math’s Analytics module works well with GA v3. Just simply connect your Google account to Rank Math plugin.
If your GA account is v4, then it won’t work since GA v4 is relatively new and is not yet ready for 3rd Party Integration. You may refer to this article: https://rankmath.com/kb/using-ga4/
