Multiple categories making duplicate content – Permalinks

    Hello.

I have unfortunately left permalinks to include categories, and I am using multiple categories per article. Now I have almost all of my articles duplicated (about 600).

Can Rank Math do something about it, like some canonical thing? I don’t know much about it.

What should I do about it? I have sent you examples.

What about new articles, should I only put one category from now on?

    Thank you

  • Hello,

Thank you for contacting Rank Math and bringing your concern to our attention. I’m sorry for the delay and for any inconvenience this issue may have caused you.

I’ve checked the links you have included, and it seems that both of them are already redirecting to the post itself without the category. Could you confirm if this issue is already resolved?

However, you can set the canonical tag to avoid duplicate contents issue:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/advanced-tab/#canonical-url

I hope that helps. Thank you, and looking forward to your update.

    Hello.

Yes, I have managed to redirect them with some code and changing permalink structure. And everything works fine.

But, what about duplicated content now? Will those old articles, that included categories in url be shown to google as duplicated? I was looking at few duplicate checkers and they don’t show, not sure what is the right thing to do here. Should I do something else or not?

Also, I am using Ahrefs, and it is showing me tags as nonchanonical duplicated content. But I have them as noindex. They say it doesn’t matter, that it is still bad practice. What should I do with them? Does Rank Math have some option to add some ‘automatic’ chanonical to all that needs those chanonicals (don’t know much about it)

    Hello,

    Thank you for that information.

The content will be the same since you’re viewing the same page and is only present in another category. There will be no duplicate in that, and it seems that you have already stripped the category in the URL since you’re not getting any issues with a duplicate checker, no need to worry on this one.

For the canonical URL, even if you don’t set a canonical URL inside Rank Math, Rank Math will set the post’s current URL as the canonical URL of the page by default. By reading the canonical URL, Google and other search engines can figure out the actual page URL and index only that URL.

I hope that helps. Thank you, and please don’t hesitate to contact us if you need further assistance.
