    Hi,

I have had some problems indexing my website to google. I have had 2 pages correctly index and the 7 have been indexed as 404 errors and 30 other old pages have been crawled but not indexed. The pages that are 404 errors are old pages that used to be a part of the wordpress theme. I have now deleted all those pages. I tried to submit the sitemap and it didn’t read it properly either.

To fix this I followed the steps for the article “How You Can Get Google To Crawl Your Website Instantly” and realized this was an older version after having created to json file key. how can I get google to index the correct pages?

Can you help me? Thanks in advance.

    Kind Regards, William

  • Hello,

We apologize for the issues you’re facing with indexing your website on Google. It sounds like you’ve encountered a few different problems, including 404 errors for deleted pages and some pages being crawled but not indexed.

Here are some steps you can take to address these issues:

    1. Fixing 404 Errors

Since the 404 errors are from old pages that have been deleted, you can set up 301 redirects from those old URLs to relevant existing pages on your site. This helps preserve any link equity from those URLs. You can refer to our guide on how to fix 404 errors for detailed instructions.

    2. Addressing Crawled but Not Indexed Pages

For the pages that are crawled but not indexed, consider the following:

    • Internal Linking Structure: Ensure that important pages have internal links from other relevant pages on your site. This can help Google understand their importance.
    • Content Quality: Make sure the content on these pages is valuable and not duplicated elsewhere on your site. If there are duplicates, use a canonical tag to point to the original content.
    • Content Audit: Conduct a content audit to identify any low-quality pages that may be affecting your site’s overall quality. You can remove or improve these pages as needed.

    3. Submitting Your Sitemap

If your sitemap isn’t being read properly, ensure that it is correctly formatted and accessible. You can check your sitemap by visiting yourdomain.com/sitemap_index.xml. Once confirmed, resubmit it in Google Search Console.

    4. Using Rank Math’s Instant Indexing Feature

To expedite the indexing process, you can use Rank Math’s Instant Indexing feature. Make sure this module is enabled in your Rank Math settings, and then submit the URLs you want indexed directly from your WordPress dashboard.

If you continue to experience issues after trying these steps, please reply to this ticket with your website URL so we can assist you further. A human agent will take over and provide more tailored support.

Thank you for raising this concern, and we hope this information helps you resolve the indexing issues!

Already resubmitted the sitemap. The 404 error pages does not need to be 301 directs since they are theme pages that should not exist. I have enabled instant indexing but I doesnt work.

    Hello,

Please remove all your submitted sitemaps and resubmit your main sitemap only /sitemap_index.xml

If you have already done that, you may need to give Google some time to recrawl your site and update the index.

    Looking forward to helping you.

Just deleted the old ones and uploaded the new one but still not working to read the sitemap. It just says failed to read sitemap. How can I figure this out?

    Hello,

Please follow this guide to fix the indexing issues in Google Search Console: https://rankmath.com/kb/fix-google-indexing-issues/

Regarding the sitemap, try to follow the steps below and see if that works for you.

    1. Flush the Sitemap cache by following this video screencast: https://i.rankmath.com/pipRDp

    2. Exclude the Sitemap files of the Rank Math plugin in your caching plugin. The cache could be via a plugin or from the server. For plugins or Cloudflare, please follow this article:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/exclude-sitemaps-from-caching/

    3. If the above steps don’t seem to work, kindly apply the following filter to your site.

    add_filter( 'rank_math/sitemap/enable_caching', '__return_false');

Here’s how you can add a filter/hook to your WordPress site:
    https://rankmath.com/kb/wordpress-hooks-actions-filters/

Once done, clear your website cache, remove all the submitted sitemaps, and resubmit only the index sitemap in the Search Console.

Let us know how it goes. Looking forward to helping you.

    Thank you.

    Very Well explained

Awsome thank you. Now the sitemap says it has been read and they detected 19 pages which is great. So now it should take a couple of weeks for it to be indexed and detected?

    Hello,

We’re glad to hear that it helped.

Regarding the indexing, Google assigns a crawl budget to your website depending on a lot of factors (especially your posting frequency + the domain authority), and that has a direct effect on how soon or how late your content can get indexed.
