Redirections

Hi, I have questions to ask:
    1) Does Redirections look up the internal link for that page, and get changed? As I know it, it gets triggered when I update the page to a new name, which I am aware of.
    2) Once I update all the links to it, it won’t appear again, showing the old version to the new version? Or I have to get a new URL index, so the old URL no longer show up, and Redirections is no longer needed? When the user clicks on it, it gives the right version, within the website and the search engine.

  • Hello,

We apologize for the issue you are facing. Here are the answers to your questions regarding redirections:

    1) Does Redirections look up the internal link for that page, and get changed?
Rank Math’s Redirection module does not automatically update internal links when you change a page’s URL. It is designed to handle redirections for URLs that may have changed or are no longer valid. You will need to manually update any internal links pointing to the old URL to ensure they direct users to the new URL.

    2) Once I update all the links to it, it won’t appear again, showing the old version to the new version?
After updating all internal links to point to the new URL, the old URL should not appear in your site’s navigation or content. However, if there are still external links or bookmarks pointing to the old URL, users may still encounter it. To ensure that search engines recognize the new URL and remove the old one from their index, you may want to submit a new sitemap through Google Search Console and request indexing of the new URL. This will help in updating the search engine’s records.

From the robot support response, it has given me a further additional question to ask, if redirection doesn’t look for internal link, how do I know I actually cover all old link to correct link, across webpages I got on website, does it mean I have to manually goes every page to do this, or is there a better way for it. But will wait for the actual person to answer my questions.

    Hello,

Yes, you may need to manually update the links on your content before adding a redirect to the page.

However, if you want to check your whole site or missed updating some internal links, you can use site auditing tools like Ahrefs or Semrush.

    Looking forward to helping you.

Hi Reinelle, okay, that’s what I was trying to avoid, but thanks for those sites, I will use those to make sure I haven’t missed anything that I need to correct. Do wish Rank Maths did have an option for this, as definitely be helpful than manual work on internal links.
