I noticed that sitemap on my website isn’t updating when I publish new blog posts, and Google Search Console is showing a “Couldn’t fetch” error. I’ve tried clearing the cache and resaving the permalink settings, but the issue persists.

  • Hello,

We apologize for the issue you are facing with your sitemap not updating and the “Couldn’t fetch” error in Google Search Console. Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

    1. Validate Your Sitemap

First, ensure that your sitemap is correctly configured. You can validate your sitemap using the Validate XML Sitemap tool. Enter your sitemap URL and click VALIDATE SITEMAP. If there are no issues detected, you will see a success message.

    2. Ensure the Sitemap is Located in the Root Folder

Make sure your sitemap is located in the root folder of your WordPress installation. The correct URL should look like this:

    3. Check Post Indexing Settings

Ensure that your posts are set to index. Go to Rank Math SEO → Titles & Meta and check the Robots Meta settings. Make sure the Index checkbox is enabled for your posts.

    Index Titles and Meta settings

    4. Flush the Cache Again

If you haven’t already, try flushing the sitemap cache again by navigating to Rank Math SEO → Sitemap Settings. Increase the value of Links Per Sitemap by one and save your settings. Then, go to Settings → Permalinks and click Save Changes again.

    Flush Permalinks

    5. Exclude the Sitemap From Caching

Make sure your sitemap is excluded from caching. You can refer to this knowledgebase article on ensuring that your sitemaps are excluded from caching.

    6. Add the Correct Sitemap to Google Search Console

In Google Search Console, navigate to Indexing → Sitemaps and ensure you have added the correct sitemap URL. If you still encounter issues, try adding a forward slash before the sitemap URL and click SUBMIT.

If after following these steps the issue persists, we recommend replying to this ticket with any additional details or errors you may be encountering, and a human agent from our support team will assist you further.

Thank you for raising this concern, and we hope these steps help resolve your issue!
