Meta Description Not Showing in Google SERP as Set in Rank Math

    Rank Math free

    Hi Rank Math Support Team,

I’m facing an issue with the meta description not reflecting correctly in Google SERPs.

    Details:

    Website URL: Portillo’s Menu
    Plugin Used: Rank Math SEO

    Issue:
I have set a custom meta description for a few pages/posts using Rank Math. However, when I search for the page on Google, the snippet shows a completely different description — not the one I’ve configured in Rank Math.

    Steps Already Taken:

    Cleared WordPress and CDN cache.

    Re-saved the post/page.

Requested indexing via Google Search Console.

Verified that only Rank Math is active for SEO (no plugin conflict).

Checked page source — the correct meta description from Rank Math is showing there.

Despite this, Google is still displaying its own generated description in the search results.

    Request:
Can you please guide me on how to ensure that Google uses the meta description set via Rank Math? Or confirm if this is simply Google’s choice based on user query/context?

    Thank you for your help!

    Best regards,
    Sophia Larey

  • Hello,

We apologize for the issue you are facing with the meta description not showing correctly in Google SERPs. Thank you for providing detailed information about your situation.

It’s important to understand that while you can set a custom meta description using Rank Math, Google sometimes chooses to display a different description based on its algorithms and the search query context. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and understand this issue better:

    1. Check What You Have Set Using Rank Math: Ensure that the meta description is correctly set in the Rank Math settings for each page/post. You can refer to this guide for more details: Check What You Have Set Using Rank Math.
Editing Meta Title and Description using Classic Editor
Editing Meta Title and Description in Gutenberg

    2. Ensure Your Schema Settings Are Valid: Make sure that the Schema settings in Rank Math are configured correctly. The Headline should show %seo_title% and the Description should show %seo_description%. This ensures that your SEO title and description are used for structured data. More information can be found here: Ensure Your Schema Settings Are Valid.

    3. Check the Title/Description Set in the Page’s Source Code: Since you mentioned that you have already checked this, ensure that the correct meta description appears in the page source. You can do this by right-clicking on your page and selecting View page source.
Check the Title and Meta description set in the page's source code

    4. The Latest Version of Your Page Hasn’t Been Indexed: Sometimes, Google may not have indexed the latest version of your page. You can check this by entering cache: followed by your page URL in the Google search bar. If the cache date is from before you made changes, you may need to wait for Google to re-crawl your page.
Enter cache followed by the full URL into the search bar

    5. Understand Google’s Choice: Ultimately, Google may choose to display a different description based on what it believes is more relevant to the user’s search intent. This is a common occurrence, and there is little that can be done to enforce the use of your custom meta description.

If you’ve gone through these steps and are still experiencing issues, please reply to this ticket with any additional details or questions, and a human agent from our support team will assist you further.

Thank you for your understanding, and we hope this helps clarify the situation!
